They Don’t Look Like Me

DESCRIZIONE

L’idea che possiamo cambiare identità modificando il nostro aspetto esteriore è antica come la coscienza del proprio corpo. Il fenomeno dei Cosplay è forse la manifestazione più contemporanea incarnata dai nativi digitali. Il termine nasce dall’abbreviazione di “costume + play” ossia “gioco del costume” e l’espressione indica sia l’azione del travestirsi, sia la presenza del costume. Nel progetto They Don’t Look Like Me, Niccolò Rastrelli indaga questo fenomeno viaggiando in Italia, Kenya e Giappone per ritrarre cosplayer insieme alle loro famiglie, creando spesso cortocircuiti ironici tra la normalità piccolo borghese e la straordinarietà di una vita sognata.

The idea that we can change our identity by altering our appearance is as ancient as our consciousness of the body itself. Perhaps the most contemporary manifestation of this phenomenon is the practice of cosplay, embodied by digital natives. The term originates from the abbreviation of “costume + play,” indicating both the act of dressing up and the costume itself. In his project They Don’t Look Like Me, Niccolò Rastrelli explores this phenomenon. He embarks on a journey to Italy, Kenya and Japan, where he portrays cosplayers with their families, often creating ironic short circuits between bourgeois “normality” and the “extraordinariness” of an imagined life.
